Sermon Series: John the Baptist There are an amazing number of conspiracy theories in our world today. These are amplified and quickly spread by the ease and speed of the internet. Some are big, bold and so they immediately put us on alert. Others are more subtle and sneak under the radar. My mum used to say to me, don’t believe everything you hear! Perhaps today, more than at any other time we need to take my mum’s advice. What do you do when you doubt the validity of something you read or hear? Do you check it on google, ask a trusted friend or consider the arguments for and against to try to get a balanced view?
Sermon Series: John the Baptist The American Football Superbowl this year was won by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Much of their success was attributed to Tom Brady who has won seven Superbowl titles and is seen as perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time. Following the win, a TV sports commentator put together his sporting GOAT list. GOAT is an acronym for Greatest of All Time. I thought his list was incomplete because he didn’t mention either Lewis Hamilton, who has won seven formula One racing titles or the self-proclaimed greatest boxer, Muhammad Ali.
I enjoy watching Formula One motor racing on TV. On the day of the race the cars all line up on the grid, engines revving and ready to go. Is that how you feel at the start of the year? Are you revved up for the year ahead, or is this year with the challenges of COVID a bit different for you? Have you been reassessing life over the summer? Has COVID made you reconsider what is important to you?
Sermon Series: John the Baptist Have you ever played peekaboo with a toddler who hasn’t quite figured out, that although they can’t see you, you can still see them? They cover their eyes, you say where’s she gone? And then as they uncover their eyes you say Boo!
Many people tend to live in a permanent state of thinking God can’t see them. We might be able to cover our own eyes, if I can’t see God, then he won’t be able to see me. But we can’t fool God who can see not only into our eyes, but right into our heart. |
