Last week we introduced the Redemptive Family devotional series to the church and thought about what kind of church we wanted to be. We were also told that members of Greyfriars are united as children of God through Christ. We learned that our God calls his believers his family. As we are the children of God, we all are brothers and sisters in Christ. We have become a godly family in this church of Greyfriars.
I have happy memories of my childhood and I am very grateful for the family life my mum and dad created in our household. They loved each other and they loved their children. They didn’t have a lot of money, but the things they did have - love, comfort and encouragement - were given to us freely, We were a family, not a perfect family, but a family. Sadly, not all families experience the quality of life I had as a child. Some families , then and now, are dysfunctional.
Recently Melanie and I had a very relaxing holiday in the Bay of Islands. Well, mostly relaxing. One day we hired push bikes and did a 14km ride of a circuit starting and ending in Paihia. Our first stop was for outdoor brunch at the café at Waitangi. The waitress brought my breakfast but didn’t bring cutlery. I went to get some and the moment my back was turned a cheeky seagull stole a piece of toast from my plate.
Today, I will be talking to you about the message of obedience. I believe that obedience is the first step we need to take to come into the presence of God.
