is there more to life?
A Greyfriars Alpha Course is running from 25 September to 4 December.
The Alpha course is a ten-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the christian faith in your life today. It is a practical introduction to the basics of christianity centred around a meal, a talk and a small-group discussion. It particularly caters for:
- people inquiring about spiritual meaning
- people seeking a faith with meaning for the future
- those wanting to investigate christianity
- newcomers to church and/or christianity
- those who want to refresh their faith
To register, or if you are just interested in learning more, contact the church office or email alpha@greyfriars.org.nz

The Greyfriars Counselling Service has operated since 1997 and caters to a wide range of people. Some are referred by their schools, Citizens Advice Bureau or doctors, and some self refer. The majority of clients live in Central Auckland but others have come from as far afield as South Auckland, North Shore and West Auckland - including people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
A sliding scale of fees operates so that clients pay what they can afford based on their income. This makes it possible for low income families to receive help.
The type of problems that are brought for counselling range widely. They include pre-marriage counselling, relationship difficulties with couples or families, career direction, anxiety attacks, depression, or drug & alcohol problems, sexual abuse, self-harm, eating disorders and spiritual direction.
Greyfriars' Counsellor, Janet Thompson, trained as a counsellor at Auckland University and UNITEC and is a current member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. She has worked as a counsellor for the last fifteen years both in private practice and with agencies like Lifeline.
Modalities used during counselling include: narrative therapy, interactive drawing, motivational interviewing, and transactional analysis. The approach used depends on what is best suited to the client.
Supervising other trainee counsellors, Christian workers and mental health workers is a growing part of Janet's practice.
